야마 = slangily abbreviated spelling of “야 인마” (야 = “Hey”, 인마 = dude, punk )

니 = you, your (accepted alternate spelling of 네)

꿈 = a dream

뭐 = what

-니 = one of many particles that can be used to form a question (뭐니)

겨우 = barely, just

그 = that, those

거 = thing

나 = me, I

참 = very, quite

편하다 = comfortable, easy

-게 = used to turn verbs into adverbs (편하게)

꿈 따위 안 꿔도 아무도 뭐라 안 하잖어

Even though I don’t have a dream or anything, nobody says anything.

따위 = etc, stuff like X (X being the preceding noun)

꾸다 = to dream

-아도 / -어도 = even if X (꿔도)

아무도 = no one

하다 = “to do”, but is often used as “to say”

-잖아 = used when telling the listener something they already know (하잖어)


전부 다다다 똑같이 나처럼 생각하고 있어

Every single person thinks exactly the same way that I do.

전부 = all, everything

다 = all

똑같다 = to be exactly the same

-처럼 = like X (나처럼)

생각하다 = to think

-고 있다 = present progressive. IE. “I am thinking” instead of “I think” (생각하고 있어)


새까까까맣게 까먹은 꿈 많던 어린 시절

I’ve com-com-completely forgotten my dream filled childhood.

새까맣다 = pitch-black

까먹다 = to forget

많다 = to be many

어리다 = to be young, to be a child

시절 = a time


대학은 걱정 마 멀리라도 갈 거니까

Don’t worry about college. I’ll go, even if it’s somewhere far away.

대학 = college/university (short for 대학교)

걱정하다 = to worry

마 = don’t do X (X being the preceding verb)

멀리 = far away

가다 = to go

-니까 = because X (갈 거니까)


알았어 엄마 지금 독서실 간다니까

Okay, mom. I’m going to the study hall now.

알았어 = Okay; I got it.

엄마 = Mom

지금 = now

독서실 = a room dedicated for students to study in

Who is the you that you’ve been dreaming of?

모습 = appearance, form


지금 니 거울 속엔 누가 보여, I gotta say

When you look in the mirror now, who do you see? I gotta say

거울 = a mirror

속 = the inside of something

-에 = at, in, on X (속에)

누가 = who

보이다 = to be seen, to be visible


너의 길을 가라고 단 하루를 살아도

Walk your own path, even if you only live one day,

-의 = indicates possession like ‘s in English (너의)

길 = road, path

단 = just

하루 = a day


뭐라도 하라고

Do something, anything.

나약함은 담아둬

Get rid of your weakness.

나약함 = weakness (나약하다 = to be weak)

담다 = to put away, to put something into something (1st half of 담아둬)

두다 = to leave something (2nd half of 담아둬)


왜 말 못하고 있어? 공부는 하기 싫다면서

Why aren’t you able to say anything? You said you hate studying, but

왜 = why

말 = words, what a person says

못하다 = to not be able to do X (X being the preceding verb)

공부 = studying (noun form of 공부하다 = to study)

-기 싫다 = to not like X, not want to do X

-다면서 = while saying X (싫다면서)


학교 때려 치기는 겁나지. 이거 봐 등교할 준비하네 벌써.

you’re scared to quit school, aren’t you? Look at this, you’re already getting ready to go to school.

학교 = school

때려치우다 = to give up on, to quit

겁나다 = to be scared

-지 = add a nuance, of “you know”, or “isn’t it?” (겁나지)

이 = this, these

보다 = to look at, to see

등교하다 = to go to school

준비하다 = to prepare

-네 = adds a nuance of surprise or amazement (준비하네)

벌써 = already


철 좀 들어 제발 좀, 너 입만 살아가지고 인마 유리멘탈 boy

Please grow up a little. You’re all talk, boy, and you’re weak-willed.

철들다 = to grow up, mature

좀 = 2 meanings. 1: “a little bit”, 2: adds a nuance of “please” to a request

제발 = please

입 = mouth

-만 = just X, only X (입만)

유리멘탈 = a phrase meaning to be fragile minded. Literally “glass mentality” (유리 = glass, 멘탈 is a Konglish word)


(Stop!) 자신에게 물어봐 언제 니가 열심히 노력했냐고

(Stop! Ask yourself if you’ve ever really put in an effort.

자신 = oneself

-에게 = to X, for X (자신에게)

물다 = to ask

언제 = when

열심히 = diligently, with good effort

노력하다 = to try, to put effort into something

강요하다 = to force, to pressure, to coerce

-지 말다 = “Don’t do X”

-아 주다 / -어주다 = adds a nuance of “please” or “as a favour to X” (말아줘)

반복되다 = to be repeating

adults and parents cram you into a cookie-cutter dream.

어른 = an adult

-들 = makes a noun plural (어른들과)

-과 / -와 = “X and” when followed by another noun, “with X” in all other cases (어른들과)

부모님 =parents

틀 = a form, a mold

박히다 = to be stuck in something

주입하다 = to cram into, pour into


장래희망 넘버원… 공무원?

Your number one aspiration is to be… a government worker?

장래회망 = 장래 = future 희망 = hope

공무원 = a government worker

말 = bottom

구원투수 = a relief pitcher


시간 낭비인 야자에 돌직구를 날려

Send a rock-hard fast ball flying at the waste of time that is evening self-studying.

시간 = time

낭비 = a waste

야자 = evening studying on one’s own (a huge part of Korean student life)

돌 = a rock

직구 = a fastball

날리다 = to make something fly, to throw


지옥 같은 사회에 반항해, 꿈을 특별사면

Rebel against this hellish society. Give your dream a special pardon.

지옥 = hell

같다 = to be like

사회 = society

반항하다 = to rebel

특별사면 = a special pardon


자신에게 물어봐 니 꿈의 profile

Ask yourself about the profile of your dream.

억압만 받던 인생 니 삶의 주어가 되어봐

Become the subject* of your oppressed life.

(*as in the subject of a sentence. The one acting, not the one being acted on.)

억압 = oppression, suppression

받다 = to receive

인생 = one’s life

삶 = one’s life (there is nuanced difference in the meaning of these 2, but I don’t trust myself to explain it well. There are multiple words in Korean that mean “life”, but sort of in different ways)

주어 = the subject of a sentence

되다 = to become
