BE Album Acknowledgements – SUGA

English translation and Korean lesson based on SUGA’s notes of thanks included in the physical copy of BTS’s 2020 album BE.


English Translation

In this time when everyone in the world feels stifled, we worked on this album in the hope that it could be even a slight strength to you, ARMY. We miss you just as much as you miss us.

I hope this time passes as quickly as possible so that ARMY and Bangtan can be even more closely bound. I miss you, ARMY.

Thank you to Bang PD and CEO Yoon, who always give us such strength. I know I can count on you.

The management team who strive to make sure we get a break: Director Sin-gyu, Soo-bin, Joong-min, Da-sol, Tae-yeong, Joon-dae, Jong-hoon, Seung-byeong, Tae-yong. I’m sorry and thank you, always. I’ll do things with more energy!

The conditioning team who take care of our condition daily: Ki-won, Chang-il, Dong-hak.

The VC team who bring cool concepts every time: Seong-hyeon, Seon-gyeong, Ka-eun, Hye-ri, Ji-hye, Soo-jeong.

The hair team who manage to make me look like a human being: Director Nae-joo, So-hi, Moo-jin, Hwa-yeon, Yae-won.

The make up team: Director Da-reum, Yoo-ri, Seon-min. Thanks to you I can carry out my work like a human being.

The stylists who always put us in decent outfits: Director Ha-jeong, team leader Hye-soo, Hong-sil, Hee-ji.

Photography director Yeong-joon, who took the awesome jacket photos. The photos are so awesome this time. Wow!

Vocabulary & Grammar Lesson

전 세계 모두가 답답한 이 시기

In this time when everyone in the world feels stifled,

전 = whole, entire

세계 = a world

모두 = every, everyone, everything

답답하다 = to be frustrated, to feel stifled, suffocated

이 = this, these

시기 = a period of time


조금이나마 아미 여러분들께 힘이 되었으면 하는 바람에 이 앨범을 작업하게 되었습니다

we worked on this album in the hope that it could be even a slight strength to you, ARMY.

조금 = a little, a bit

-이나마 / -나마 = at least X, even if only X. Carries the nuance that X isn’t the ideal option, but it’s better than nothing (조금이나마)

여러분 = you (plural)

-들 = makes a noun plural (여러분들께)

-께 = to X, for X (formal) (여러분들께)

힘 = strength, energy

되다 = to become

-었으면 하다 / -았으면 하다 = to wish/hope that X is the case (되었으면 하는)

바람 = a wish

-에 = at X, on X (바람에)

작업하다 = to work on something

-게 되다 = to “end up doing X”. Implies that X wasn’t plan A. (작업하게 되었습니다)


여러분들이 저희를 보고 싶어 하는 만큼이나 저희도 아미 여러분들이 보고 싶습니다

We miss you just as much as you miss us.

저희 = we, us

보다 = to look at, to see

-고 싶다 = to want to do X (보고 싶어)

“보고 싶다” = to miss someone

만큼 = to the extent of X, as much as X; X being the preceding noun/clause

-도 = X too, even X (저희도)


하루빨리 이러한 시간이 지나서 더욱더 돈독해지는 아미와 방탄이 되었으면 좋겠습니다…

I hope this time passes as quickly as possible so that ARMY and Bangtan can be even more closely bound.

하루빨리 = as soon as possible

이러하다 = to be like this

시간 = time

지나다 = to pass

-아서 / -어서 = to do X and then (지나서)

더욱더 = even more

돈독하다 = to be closely knit, closely bound

-아지다 / -어지다 = makes a verb transitional. IE: not “to be closely knit” but “to become closely knit” (돈독해지는)

-와 / -과 = “and” when followed by an accompanying noun. Otherwise “with” (아미와)

-었으면 좋겠다 / -았으면 좋겠다 = to wish/hope that X is the case (되었으면 좋겠습니다)

언제나 = always

크다 = to be big

-어주다 / -아주다 = adds a nuance of “for” or “as a favour to” someone (되어주시는)

-시- = inserted into verbs/adjectives when the subject deserves extra respect  (되어주시는)

감사하다 = to appreciate, to thank


든든합니다

I know I can count on you.

든든하다 = to feel reassured, secure


항상 휴식시간 확보를 위해 힘써주시는 의전팀

The management team who strive to make sure we get a break:

항상 = always

휴식시간 = a break

확보 = the act of securing something (verb form: 확보하다)

위하다 = to be for X, for the purpose of X; X being the preceding noun/clause

힘쓰다 = to strive


신규 이사님, 수빈 님, 중민 님, 다솔 님, 대영 님, 준대 님, 종훈 님, 승병 님, 태용 님

Director Sin-gyu, Soo-bin, Joong-min, Da-sol, Tae-yeong, Joon-dae, Jong-hoon, Seung-byeong, Tae-yong.

매번 = every time

미안하다 = to be sorry

-고 = X and (미안하고)


더 에너지 넘치게 황동할게요!

I’ll do things with more energy!

더 = more

넘치다 = to overflowing, be full of

-게 = can turn an adjective into an adverb. IE: “overflowing” becomes “overflowingly” (넘치게)

활동하다 = to move, work, be active

-ㄹ게요 / -을게요 = “I’ll do X” with an added nuance of “if that’s okay with you” or “unless you object” (formal. Drop the 요 to make it casual) (활동할게요)

The conditioning team who take care of our condition daily:

하루 = a day

-의 = indicates possession, like ‘s in English (하루의)

담당하다 = to be in charge of
