-네 = adds a nuance of surprise or amazement (했네)

(쉿 is the sound used to shush someone in Korean, but sounds very similar to the English word “shit”.)


그럼 나는 말해 이윤 원래 없어 cause it’s HIPHOP

Then I answer, “There’s not really a reason. Cause it’s HIPHOP.”

그럼 = then, if so

나 = I, me

말하다 = to say, to speak

이유 = a reason

원래 = originally

없다 = to not be found, to not exist

남 = others

-들 = makes a noun plural (남들처럼)

할 말이 많아서 남들이 해주는 이야기론 부족하다 느꼈지

I had lots to say, so it felt like the stories of others weren’t enough.

하다 = to do

말 = words, speech

-아서 / -어서 = because X (많아서)

-아주다 / -어주다 = adds a nuance of “for” or “as a favour to” someone (해주는)

이야기 = a story

부족하다 = to be lacking, insufficient

느끼다 = to feel

-지 = adds a nuance of “you know” or “right?” (느꼈지)


일단은 억지 거짓 덕지덕지 발라 가사랍시고 썼지

At first I laid it on thick with nonsense and lies and called them lyrics.

일단 = first of all, for now

억지 = forced, affected, feigned

거짓 =  a lie

덕지덕지 = thick, thickly

바르다 = to spread, to apply

I briefly put down the me that everyone knows in the blank sheets in between the pages of my homework books.

And I erased it. I emptied it.

I’m free because I’m on the beat.

위 = the top of something

the hip hop that had made its home inside of me

안 = the inside of something

자리 = a spot (as in, “Don’t sit there, that’s my spot.”)

고수하다 = to cling to, hold fast to


날 송두리째 뒤집어놔 그 어린 날

turned me completely upside down at that young age.

뒤집다 = to turn something inside out or upside down

교과서 귀퉁이에 적어내렸던 my 16 bars

My 16 bars that I jotted down in the corner of my textbook,

thanks to them, I rejected a life of stability and
