-의 = indicates possession, like ‘s in English (20대의)

백수 = someone who’s in between jobs

내일 = tomorrow

두렵다 = to be scared

참 = quite, very


웃기지 어릴 땐 뭐든 가능할거라 믿었었는데

It’s funny. When I was younger I believed that anything was possible.

웃기다 = to be funny

-지 = adds a nuance of “isn’t it” or “you know” (웃기지)

어리다 = to be young

때 = the point in time when something happens

뭐 = what, something

가능하다 = to be possible

믿다 = to believe, to trust


하루를 벌어 하루를 사는 게 빠듯하단 걸 느꼈을 때

Experiencing the reality of living hand to mouth trying to scrape by,

하루 = a day

벌다 = to earn

사다 = to buy

게/것 = a thing

빠듯하다 = to scrape by, scrape together a living

느끼다 = to feel

(In 2013 a slough of Korean rappers created diss tracks using the beat from a track called “Control” by Big Sean, with Kendrik Lamar and Jay Electronica. You can read about it here. Many vets and rookies on the hip hope scene were part of this diss battle, so “downloading the Control beat” became a bit of a cult slang term. However, the Konglish word used for “download” is just 다운 – “down” – as used in SUGA’s play on words here. The literal translation of this line is “they keep being downloaded.”)

기분 = feelings, mood

계속하다 = to continue to “keep” doing something

-네 = adds a nuance of surprise or amazement (다운되네)

뜨다 = for the sun to rise

새벽 = dawn, the small hours of the morning

가장 = the most (as in “the most lovely person”, not “who has the most money?”)

어둡다 = to be dark

-니까 / -으니까 = because X (어두우니까)

In the distant future, don’t ever forget who you are now.

훗날 = the future

-에 = at X, on X (훗날에)

너 = you

지금 = now

절대 = never, absolutely not

잊다 = to forget


지금 니가 어디 서 있든 잠시 쉬어가는 것일 뿐

Wherever you’re standing right now, it’s just a short pause to rest.

어디 = where, somewhere

서다 = to stand

잠시 = brief, briefly

쉬어가다 = to rest before going again (쉬다 = to rest + 가다 = to go)

포기하다 = to give up

알다 = to know

-잖아 = used when saying something the listener already knows (알잖아)

너무 = too, so

멀어지다 = to become far away, to drift away

just like that, when we open our eyes, it’s name becomes yesterday.

어느새 = before one knows it

눈 = an eye

뜨다 = to open (eyes only, not doors, windows, etc)

-어보다 / -아보다 = to give X a try, to see about doing X. Read more here. (떠보면)

어제 = yesterday

이름 = a name

되다 = to become


내일은 오늘이 되고 오늘은 어제가 되고

Tomorrow becomes today, today becomes yesterday, and

내일은 어제가 되어 내 등 뒤에 서있네

tomorrow becomes yesterday and is standing at my back.

등 = one’s back, the back of something


삶은 살아지는 게 아니라 살아내는 것,

Life isn’t for existing, it’s for living, and

아니다 = to not be X (X being the preceding noun)

살아내다 = to live (살다 = to live, and adding 내다 gives it a bit of a nuance of being deliberate)


그렇게 살아내다가 언젠간 사라지는 것

and as you live, someday it disappears.

그렇게 = like that

언젠가 = someday, sometime

사라지다 = to disappear

멍때리다 = to space out

쓸려가다 = to be swept away(쓸리다 = to be swept up + 가다 = to go)


어차피 다 어제가 되고 말 텐데

In the end everything will end up as yesterday, so

어차피 = anyway, in the end

다 = all, everything, everyone


하루하루가 뭔 의미겠어

what’s the significance of each day?

의미 = meaning, significance


행복해지고, 독해지고 싶었는데

I wanted to become happy, to become tenacious.

행복하다 = to be happy

-어지다 / -아지다 = makes an adjective transitional. IE: “to be happy” becomes “to become happy” (행복해지고)

독하다 = to be strong, potent, persevering

-고 싶다 = to want to do X (독해지고 싶었는데)

Why do I just keep getting weaker?

자꾸 = “keep” (as used above, not as in “Can I keep this?”)

약하다 = to be weak
