Language Note:

This song is written almost entirely in 존댓말, which is the grammatical form of Korean you use when speaking to someone with respect/slightly more formally. I will define grammatical particles using the 반말, or casual form. The difference is usually as simple as the 존댓말 having 요 added to the end.

I’d like to highlight one grammatical principle that has been used extensively in this song: 잖아(요). This particle gets added to the end of a sentence when the speaker is saying something that the listener already knows or should already know. You can read more about it here. Depending on the sentence it’s in and the feel of the lines around it, I sometimes feel that it’s necessary to include it explicitly in the translation, and I sometimes feel that it would be unnecessary and possibly even distracting. Just keep your eyes open for it if you want to get a sense for the extra little nuance it adds.
