Language Note:

There are two words for memory in Korean: 기억 and 추억. Both are commonly translated as “memory” in English, but they are actually slightly different.

기억 is general, and can be used to refer to any type of memory. You would use it to say that you remembered to buy bread the other day, or that you can’t remember the phone number for the pizza delivery place. You could also use it to say you remember that random kid from third grade who was way funnier than anyone has any business being at that age. (Shout out to Sterling Macaulay. You still hilarious in your thirties?)

추억 is more specific. It refers to memories that have emotion woven into them. You would use 추억 to talk about how you remember your first love, to talk about the last conversation you remember having with your grandma, etc.
