Verse 1:

그 = that, those

길다 = to be long

밤 = a night

너 = you

따라다 = to follow

흐르다 = to flow

-만 = just X, only X (흘러만)

가다 = to go

것 같다 = to feel like/seem like X (X being the preceding clause)


이 시간이 널 따라 흐려지는 것 같아

This time seems to fade away after you.

이 = this, these

시간 = time, hours

흐려지다 = to become murky, to fade away


왜 멀어져가 왜 닿지 않을 만큼 가서

Why are you drifting away? Why have you gone out of reach?

왜 = why

멀어지다 = to drift apart, to become distant

닿다 = to touch, to reach

-지 않다 = to not do X (닿지 않을)

만큼 = to the extent of X, as much as X (X being the preceding noun/clause)


Tell me why 멀어져가 why

Tell me why you’re drifting away. Why?

Am I no longer visible in your eyes? Uh

니 = you, your (alternate spelling of 네)

눈 = an eye

-에 = at X, on X (눈에)

더 이상 = no longer, not anymore

내 = I, me, my

보이다 = to be seen, to be visible

-이란 = to be called X (사랑이란)

안녕 = hello/goodbye

말하다 = to say, to speak

-지 = adds a nuance of “you know” or “right?” (말했지)

Every time I fell asleep

매번 = every time

잠들다 = to fall asleep

때 = a point in time

-마다 = every X, every occurrence of X (때마다)


난 그게 죽기보다 더 싫었어

I would rather die than that,

죽다 = to die

-기 = can turn a ver into a noun. IE: “to die” becomes “death” (죽기)

-보다 = compared to X, more than X (죽기보다)

싫다 = to dislike, to hate


이 밤이 괜히 너와 내 끝인 것 같아서

because it feels like for no reason tonight is the end of you and me.

괜히 = to no avail, in vain

-와 / -과 = “and” when followed by an accompanying noun. Otherwise “with”. (너와)

끝 = the end of something

-아서 / -어서 = because X (같아서)


I don’t know you, you didn’t know me

헤어짐의 원인은 꽤나 심플했지

The cause of our parting was pretty simple.

헤어짐 = a parting, a break-up

-의 = indicates possession, like ‘s in English (헤어짐의)

원인 = a cause

꽤나 = pretty, fairly


이제 내가 그 말을 말해

Now I say those words.

이제 = now

말 = words, speech


넌 ‘안녕’처럼 내 시작과 끝에

Just like ‘annyeong”, you are at my beginning and end.

(The word 안녕 is both a meeting and a parting greeting. It means both hello and goodbye.)

-처럼 = like X (‘안녕’처럼)

시작 = a beginning, a start


그 곳에

In that place

곳 = a place


모든 게 멈췄지 우린 적신호인 듯, stop

everything came to a stop, as though we’re a red light, stop.

모든 = every

멈추다 = to stop, to come to a stop

적신호 = a red light, a warning light

듯 = as if X, as though X (X being the preceding clause)


할 말은 끝났지 눈물과 놓이는, dot

There came an end to the things we had to say. With our tears we made a dot.

(The dot here refers to a period. There is a Korean expression that sort of translates to “putting a period at the end of X” and it means to bring something to a close, to put an end to something.)

하다 = to do

끝나다 = to end

눈물 = tears

놓이다 = to put down, to place


I’m not okay 이 부정을 반복해

I’m not okay. I’m repeatedly in denial.

부정 = denial

반복하다 = to repeat something


내 맘을 읊을 수 있다면 낭독해.

If I could read out my mind, I’d recite it.

맘 = one’s heart/mind. In the metaphorical sense, not the anatomical. (shortened form of 마음)

읊다 = to recite

-ㄹ 수 있다 / -을 수 있다 = to be able to do X (읊을 수 있다면)

-다면 = if X (있다면)

낭독하다 = to recite


이건 발악이자 바람인 걸

This is a struggle and a wish.

발악 = a struggle, a desperate attempt

-이자 = “and” sort of. Used to mean that something is two things at once. (발악이자)

바람 = a wish


끝없는 내 사랑이자 사람인 걸.

You’re my endless love and my person.

끝없다 = to be endless

사람 = a person
