(NG – an acronym for “Not Good” – is a phrase used in Korea to mean a bad take or a blooper in filming.)

영화 = a move

같다 = to be like X (X being the preceding word)

Everyone makes mistakes, and 

누구 = who, someone

실수 = a mistake

고통 = pain

-들 = makes a noun plural (그들은)

고해와 봉쇄

confessions and blockades

고해 = a confession

-와 / -과 = “and” when followed by an accompanying noun. Otherwise “with” (고해와)

전하고파 용기를

I want to convey courage.

전하다 = to convey, to deliver

-고파 = to be hungry for X, to really want to do X (전하고파)

용기 = courage


행복의 기준은 너고 그 길을 걸어

You are the standard for happiness, and you walk that path.

행복 = happiness

-의 = indicates possession, like ‘s in English (행복의)

기준 = a standard, a criterion

너 = you

길 = a road, a path

걷다 = to walk


채워 주고파 믿음

I want to fill you with faith.

채우다 = to fill something

-어 주다 / -아 주다 = adds a nuance of “for” or “as a favour to” someone. Read more here. (채워 주고파)

믿음 = faith


단순하고 쉽게 배가 차는 케이크 조각처럼

Like a simple, filling piece of cake.

단순하다 = to be simple

쉽다 = to be easy

-게 = turns an adjective into an adverb. IE: “easy” becomes “easily” (쉽게)

배 = a stomach

차다 = to fill

조각 = a piece, a slice

-처럼 = like X (조각처럼)

(This is an abbreviation of 취업 – to get a job – and 준비생 – a student who is preparing for something. Youth unemployment is a huge issue in South Korea.)

뜨거운 감자 밖에 될 수 없는 주제

A subject that is bound to be a hot potato.

떠겁다 = to be hot

감자 = a potato

밖 = the outside of something

-에 = at X, on X (밖에)

X 밖에 = nothing apart from X, nothing but X (literally “nothing outside of X”)

되다 = to become

-ㄹ 수 없다 – / -을 수 없다 = to not be able to do X (될 수 없는)

주제 = a subject, a topic


한마음이 주체가 돼

The prevailing mindset makes us the acting agent,

한 = one (shortened form of 하나)

마음 = one’s heart/mind (in the metaphorical sense, not the anatomical)

주체 = the subject of a sentence, the one taking action


문제에 Complain

just complaining in the face of problems.

(A common source of contention in SK is the older generation not admitting that economics and other factors are the issue, and simply blaming the youth for the state of things, saying that young people are soft, and they just complain, and if they’d just be willing to work hard they wouldn’t have these problems.)

문제 = a problem


현실에 평화를 꿈꾸지만

In reality we dream of peace, but

현실 = reality

평화 = peace

꿈을 꾸다 = to dream


불가피한 전쟁 중

we’re in the middle of an unavoidable war.

불가피하다 = to be unavoidable, inevitable

계속되는 일보 후퇴

A continual step-by-step retreat.

계속되다 = to continue

일보 = step-by-step

후퇴 = the act of retreating

이 = two

전진 = forward motion, progress

언제 = when


진짜 가짜 나누는 일자리

Jobs that divide real and fake.

진짜 = something real

가짜 = something fake

나누다 = to share, to divide

일자리 = a job position


가려진 그림자

Hidden shadows.

가리다 = to conceal, to obscure

-어지다 / -아지다 = makes an adjective or verb transitional. IE: “to conceal” becomes “to start concealing” (가려진)

그림자 = a shadow


피땀이 비참 해져가는 일당

Daily wages that make our blood and sweat look pitiful.

피 = blood

땀 = sweat

비참하다 = to be pitiful, wretched

일당 = daily wages, daily pay


새싹도 시들게 만드는 가뭄 같은 해답

A solution that’s like a drought, making even fresh sprouts wither.

새싹 = a new sprout

시들다 = to wither

만들다 = to make

가뭄 = drought

해답 = an answer, a solution


소리쳐 노래해봐도 난청 같은 이 세상

Though I shout and sing, this world seems to be hard of hearing.

소리치다 = to shout

노래하다 = to sing
