Verse 1:

무언가 깨지는 소리

The sound of something breaking.

무언가 = something

깨지다 = to break

소리 = a sound (sometimes used to mean voice)

문득 잠에서 깨

I suddenly awake from sleep.

나 = me, I

문득 = suddenly

잠 = sleep

-에서 = out of X, from X (잠에서)

깨다 = to wake up (literally to break out of sleep, making this a clever wordplay with line 1)

낯설음 가득한 소리

A sound full of unfamiliarity.

낯설음 = unfamiliarity

가득하다 = to be filled with

귀를 막아보지만 잠 들지 못해

I cover my ears, but I can’t fall asleep.

귀 = an ear

막다 = to block, to obstruct

-지만 = X, but… (막아보지만)

들다 = to enter (in Korean you say “to enter sleep” instead of “to fall asleep”)

못하다 = to not be able to do something

목이 자꾸 아파와

My throat has been hurting constantly.

목 = neck, throat

자꾸 = keeps (As in “my throat keeps hurting”, not as in “I’m going to keep this.”)

아프다 = to hurt, to be sick, to be sore

-아 오다 / -어 오다 = to have been doing X up until now (아파와)

감싸 보려 하지만

I try to wrap it up, but

감싸다 = to wrap something, wrap something up

-려 하다 = to try to do X, to be going to do X (감싸 보려 하지만)

나에겐 목소리가 없어

I have no voice.

-에게 = to X (나에게)

목소리 = voice

없다 = to not be found, not exist

오늘도 그 소릴 들어

Today again I hear that sound.

오늘 = today

-도 = X too (오늘도)

그 = that, those

듣다 = to hear


또 울리고 있어 그 소리가

It’s ringing out again, that sound.

또 = again, once again

울리다 = to ring, to vibrate

-고 있다 = present progressive. IE: “It is ringing” instead of “it rings” (울리고 있어)

이 얼어붙은 호수에 또 금이 가

A crack forms once again on this frozen lake.

이 = this, these

얼어붙다 = to be frozen (얼다 = to be frozen + 붙다 = to be stuck together)

호수 = a lake

-에 = to X, at X, on X (호수에)

금 = a crack, a fissure

가다 = to go

그 호수에 내가 날 버렸잖아

I threw myself into the lake.

내 = me, my

버리다 = to throw away, throw out, abandon

-잖아 = used when saying something that the listener already knows or should already know (버렸잖아)

내 목소릴 널 위해 묻었잖아

For you I buried my voice.

-ㄹ/-를 위하다 = to be for X, for the purpose of X (널 위해)

묻다 = to bury

Verse 2:

날 버린 겨울 호수 위로

On the winter lake into which I threw myself

겨울 = winter

위 = the top of something

-로 = to X, onto X (위로)

두꺼운 얼음이 얼었네

a thick ice has formed.

두껍다 = to be thick

얼음 = ice

-네 = adds a nuance of surprise or amazement (얼었네)

잠시 들어간 꿈 속에도

Even in the dream that I briefly entered

잠시 = briefly, for a moment

들어가다 = to go into

꿈 = a dream

속 = the inside of something

나를 괴롭히는 환상통은 여전해

the phantom pain continues to torment me.

괴롭히다 = to be tormented, harassed

환상통 = phantom pain

여전하다 = to remain the same, to continue as before

나는 날 잃은 걸까

잃다 = to lose 

-ㄹ/를까 = used when asking someone “Should I do X?” OR when wondering about something to oneself, like it’s used here. (잃은 걸까)

Or did I gain you?

아님 = or (abbreviated form of 아니면)

얻다 = to gain, to attain

나 문득 호수로 달려가

Suddenly, I run to the frozen lake.

달려가다 = to run to (달리다 = to run + 가다 = to go)

오 그 속에 내 얼굴 있어

Oh, I see my face in it.

얼굴 = a face

있다 = to be found, to exist


부탁해 아무 말도 하지 마

Please, don’t say anything at all.

부탁하다 = to request

아무 = any, no 

말하다 = to speak

-지 마 = “Don’t do X.” (하지 마)

입을 막으려 손을 뻗어보지만

I reach my hand out to cover my mouth, but

입 = a mouth

-려/으려 = in order to X, with the intention of X (막으려)

손 = hand(s)

뻗다 = to reach out, to extend

-아 보다 / -어 보다 = to give X a try, to do X and see what happens. Read more here. (뻗어보지만)

결국엔 언젠가 봄이 와

in the end, some day, spring will come,

결국 = finally, in the end

언젠가 = sometime, someday

봄 = spring (the season)

오다 = to come

얼음들은 녹아 내려 흘러 가

and all this ice will melt and flow away.

-들 = makes a noun plural (얼음들은)

녹다 = to melt

내리다 = to lower, to go down

흐르다 = to flow

Tell me 내 목소리가 가짜라면

Tell me, if my voice was fake,

가짜 = something fake

-면 = “if X”. When it’s attached to a noun, 라 (when following a vowel) or 이라 (noun) is inserted in between. (가짜라면)

날 버리지 말았어야 했는지

should I not have thrown myself in?

-어야 하다/-아야 하다 = to have do X (말았어야 했는지)
