Verse 1:

달과 지구는 언제부터 이렇게 함께했던 건지

How long have the moon and the earth been together like this?

달 = moon

-과 = “and” when followed by another noun, “with” in all other cases (달과)

지구 = earth

언제 = when

-부터 = starting at X , from X (언제부터)

이렇게 = like this

함께 = together


존재로도 빛나는 너 그 곁을 나 지켜도 될지

You, who shine just by existing, could I stay by your side?

존재 = existence, presence (closer to existence, but they use it a little differently than we do)

-로 = via X, using X, with X (존재로도) 

-도 = too, even (존재로도)

빛나다 = to shine

너 = you

그 = that

곁 = one’s side. Not the side of your body, but the spot right at your side

나 = I, me

지키다 = to protect, guard, but when used with 곁, it means “to stay at your side”

-도 되다 = to be okay if X happens, often used to ask “can I do X?” (지켜도 될지)


너는 나의 지구

You are my earth.

-의 = indicates possession, like ‘s in English (나의)


네게 난 just a moon,

To you I’m just a moon,

네 = you, your

-에게 = to X (네게)


네 맘을 밝혀주는 너의 작은 별

your small star that brightens your heart.

맘 = heart (short for 마음)

밝히다 = to brighten

작다 = to be small

별 = a star


너는 나의 지구

You are my earth.

And all I see is you

이렇게 그저 널 바라볼 뿐인 걸

All I do is just gaze at you like this.

그저 = just (as in “only”, not as in “righteous”)

바라보다 = to look at, gaze at


Pre-Chorus:

모두들 내가 아름답다 하지만

Everyone says I’m beautiful, but

모두 = everything, everyone

-들 = makes a noun plural (모두들)

아름답다 = to be beautiful

하지만 = but


내 바다는 온통 까만 걸

my sea is completely pitch-dark.

바다 = sea

온통 = entirely, wholly

까맣다 = to be pitch-dark


꽃들이 피고 하늘이 새파란 별

A star where flowers bloom and the sky is deep blue,

꽃 = a flower

피다 = to be blooming

하늘 = the sky

새파랗다 = to be deep blue


정말 아름다운 건 너야

the truly beautiful one is you.

장말 = really, truly


Chorus:

문득 생각해 너도 날 지금 보고 있을까

Suddenly I think, are you looking at me right now too?

문득 = suddenly

생각하다 = to think

지금 = now

보다 = to see, to look at

-고 있다 = present progressive form. IE: “I am looking” instead of “I look” (보고 있을까)

-ㄹ까 = used to end a sentence in which one is wondering about something, often to oneself. (있을까)


내 아픈 상처까지 네게 다 들키진 않을까

Even my hurting wounds have all been exposed to you, haven’t they?

아프다 = to hurt, to be sick

상처 = a wound

-까지 = to X, even to the extent of X (상처까지)

다 = all

들키다 = to be revealed, exposed, found out

-지 않다 = to not do X (들키진 안을까)


네 주위를 맴돌게

I’ll revolve around you.

주위 = the surrounding area

맴돌다 = to spin, rotate, hover, linger (basically to hang around in the air)

-게 = I’ll do X, with an added nuance of “if that’s ok with you” (맴돌게)


네 곁에 있어 줄게

I’ll stay by your side.

-에 = at X, on X (곁에)

있다 = to be in a location, to have something (depending on the preceding particle)

-어 주다 or -아 주다 = to do X, with an added nuance of “as a favour to you” (있어 줄게 and 되어 줄게)


네 빛이 되어 줄게

I’ll become your light.

All for you

빛 = light

되다 = to become


Verse 2:

난 이름조차 없었어 내가 널 만나기 전까진

I didn’t even have a name until I met you.

이름 = a name

-조차 = even X (이름조차)

없다 = to not have something, not be in a location (depending on the preceding particle)

만나다 = to meet

-기 전 = before X (만나기 전까지)


넌 내게 사랑을 줬고 이제는 내 이유가 됐어

You gave me love, and now you’ve become my reason.

사랑 = love

주다 = to give

-고 = X and (줬고)

이제 = now

이유 = a reason


너는 나의 지구

두 = two

눈 = an eye

감다 = to close (eyes only, not doors, etc)

-아도 or -어도 = even if X (감아도)

파랗다 = to be blue

밀려오다 = to flood, to surge


In the full moon night

두 눈을 뜨고서 널 담아도 괜찮은 걸까

would it be okay if I open my eyes and fill them with you?

뜨다 = to open (eyes only, not doors, etc)

-고서 = after X, doing X and then… (뜨고서)

담다 = to put into something (this line is literally to “put you into my eyes”)

괜찮다 = to be okay


Chorus:

In the brightness of day and in the darkness of night you stay by my side.

환하다 = to be bright; radiant

낮 = daytime

밤 = night


슬플 때에도 아플 때에도 그저 날 비추는 너

In times of sadness and in times of pain, you just illuminate me.

슬프다 = to be sad

때 = the point in time at which something happens

비추다 = to shine, to illuminate, to reflect


어떤 말보다 고맙단 말보다 난 너의 곁에 있을게

Rather than saying some words, rather than saying thank you, I’ll be by your side.

어떤 = some, certain ones

말 = words

-보다 = more than X, or in this case “rather than/instead of X” (말보다)

고맙다 = to be thankful


캄캄한 밤에 훨씬 더 환하게

In the pitch-black night shining even more brightly,

캄캄하다 = to be extremely dark

훨씬 = much more

더 = more


너의 곁을 지킬게

I’ll stay by your side.

알다 = to know
