그 = that, those

어느 = which, certain ones

-도 = X too, even X (누구도)

아니다 = to not be X (X being the preceding noun)

-만 = just X, only X (너만이)

나 = I, me

위로하다 = to comfort

절대 = never, not at all

한 = one (shortened form of 하나)

번 = a time (as in “one time”, not “what time is it?”)

-지 않다 = to not do X (떠나지지가 않아)


죽고 싶다며 그만큼 넌 또 열심히 살아

You say you want to die, but you live that much harder.

죽다 = to die

-고 싶다 = to want to do X (죽고 싶다며)

-며 / -으며 = while X (싶다며)

-만큼 = since X, to the same degree as X (그만큼)

너 = you

또 = again, once more

열심히 = diligently, in a manner of working hard

살다 = to live


다 내려놓고 싶다며 또 다른 추를 달아

You say you want to put everything down, but you hoist yet another weight.

다 = all, everything, everyone

내려놓다 = to put something down

다르다 = to be different

추 = a weight

달다 = to hoist, to put up


생각하지 말잔 생각조차 생각이잖아, you know

Even the thought, “Let’s not think” is a thought, you know.

생각하다 = to think

-지 말다 = used to tell someone not to do X (생각하지 말잔)

-자 = “Let’s do X” (말잔)

생각 = a thought

-조차 = even X (생각조차)

-잖아 = used to say something the listener already knows (생각이잖아)


사실은 우린 이런 운명이란 걸 you know

Actually, you know that we’re destined to be this way.

사실 = actually

이렇다 = to be like this

운명 = fate, destiny


끝없는 고통 속에 웃는 거란 걸 you know

You know that we smile in the endless pain.

끝없다 = to be endless

고통 = pain

속 = inside of something

-에 = at X, on X (속에)

웃다 = to smile, to laugh


자유를 말하는 순간 자유는 없어 you know

You know that in the moment you talk about freedom, there is no freedom.

자유 = freedom

말하다 = to say, to speak

순간 = a moment

없다 = to not be found, not exist

달의 시간에 영혼의 눈으로 저 밤하늘을 봐

In the moonlight hours, look at that night sky through the eyes of your soul.

달 = a moon

시간 = time

영혼 = a soul

눈 = an eye

-으로 / -로 = via X, using X, through X (눈으로)

저 = that, those

하늘 = a sky

보다 = to look at, to see


너에겐 보여줄 거야, 너의 창, 너의 시간

I’ll show you; your window, your time.

보이다 = to show, to be visible

-어주다 / -아주다 = adds a nuance of “for” or “as a favour to” someone (보여줄)

창 = a window


알고 있니? 저 가로등에도 가시가 많아

Did you know? That streetlight also has a lot of thorns.

알다 = to know

-고 있다 = present progressive form. IE: “to be going” instead of “to go”. Unique quirk of the Korean language: this is the most common/most correct way to say that you know something. “I am knowing X” (알고 있니)

가로등 = a street light

가시 = a thorn

많다 = to be many


저 명멸하는 빛을 자세히 한 번 쳐다봐

Take a close look at that flickering light.

명멸하다 = to glimmer, to flicker

빛 = light (in the abstract. Not a source of light, but the light that comes from a source)

자세하다 = to be detailed

-히 = makes a 하다 adjective into an adverb. IE: “quick” becomes “quickly” (자세히)

쳐다보다 = to look at


야경이란 게 참 잔인하지 않니

Isn’t the night view really cruel?

야경 = a night view

참 = quite, really

잔인하다 = to be cruel


누구의 가시들이 모여 펼쳐진 장관이

Someone’s thorns, gathered and spread out in a great spectacle.

-들 = makes a noun plural (가시들이)

모이다 = to gather, to collect, to assemble

펼쳐지다 = to spread out, to unfold

장관 = a spectacle, a magnificent sight


분명 누군간 너의 가시를 보며 위로받겠지

For sure someone will see your thorns and be comforted.

분명 = clearly, certainly

누군가 = someone

위로 = comfort

받다 = to receive

-지 = adds a nuance of “you know” or “don’t you think?” (위로 받겠지)
