Language Note:

Very often in the Korean language, pronouns are omitted from sentences, leaving it to context to let you know who the sentence is about. The general rule is that unless context dictates otherwise, the speaker is the subject of the sentence when no subject pronoun has been included.

One of the ways that you can construct the imperative form (aka: tell someone what to do) in Korean looks identical to the plain present tense form without pronouns. When speaking, context and intonation work together to let you know if someone is saying, “I eat rice” or giving you the command: “Eat rice”. However, in song lyrics the context is often not present, and the intonation is sacrificed to the melody.

As a result some song lyrics can read both as a present tense conjugation and as an imperative. There are a few lines in the chorus of this song that could be read either way.

Line 1: “It’s okay. Forget it on the count of one, two, three.” could read as “It’s okay. I/we forget it on the count of one, two, three.”

Line 2: “Erase all the sad memories.” could be “I/we erase all the sad memories.”

Line 6: “Hold each other’s hands and smile.” could be “We hold each other’s hands and smile.”
